The Land: The views are breathtaking. Whether you are looking for a hobby farm, a country home getaway, a recreational/hunting/fishing property, or a more sustainable lifestyle, the opportunity is here. The Driftless Region’s characteristic steep forested hillsides, rock outcroppings, cold water trout streams, and both ridgetop and valley land are all part of this 270 (more or less) acres. What adds to the excitement is the biodiversity of plants and animals. A nearly 18-acre restored prairie greets you on the ridgetop, and while not certified organic, the land has not been treated with chemicals in at least 15 years. The West Fork of the Kickapoo, one of our nation’s best trout streams, runs the length of the property.
The Home (Efficient and Sustainable): This super-insulated 2,083 square foot, timber-frame home was constructed in 2006. Specifically designed to be energy efficient. The 19” thick walls are made of two parallel masonry compressed-earth block walls with a 5” gap in between filled with perlite insulation. Natural light and passive solar. The attached 25’x13’ greenhouse helps warm the house in winter and provides a wonderful place to view wildlife on those sunny, but seasonably colder days. The main floor cherry cabinetry was made from trees harvested on the property. The upscale kitchen has both granite and stainless-steel countertops. The in-floor heat gives that constant, quiet, even radiant warmth. An efficient (local limestone) Russian fireplace, with its labyrinth of heated passages warms the living space for long periods of time. Other unique features include armored cable (BX) wiring that provides EMF shielding, fiber-optic internet, wiring in place for future solar electric, and a unique rainwater collection system that includes a modern cistern and UV filtration. The exterior stucco is made of very weather resistant lime plaster. The large garden area is complete with high fencing and an electric wire that keeps wildlife out.
The Outbuilding: Made of straw bale construction, the 38’x30’ outbuilding has three-foot thick walls and its own woodburning stove. Currently it is being used as a woodworking shop, but its utility is limitless.
The Area: Town of Liberty is quiet and friendly and is one of the few Wisconsin towns with a Dark Sky ordinance, making this a great area for stargazing. The property is located between Viroqua and Viola and is not far from Organic Valley. The local airport is less than 10 miles away. Come, rest, relax, create.
